U.S. History
2019-2020 Syllabus
Ms. Suazo
Dear Students and Parents,
This year in U.S. History we will study the ideas, issues, and events from the framing of the Constitution up to the Industrial Revolution. We will look at the development of the United States government and regional differences by examining American politics, society, culture, and economy. We will learn about the challenges facing the new nation, including the causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War. We will also look at the changing social and economic conditions that resulted from the Industrial Revolution (History-Social Science Content Standards).
Daily Requirements
Materials: The following items should be brought to class daily.
Ø Spiral notebook (for interactive notebook)
Ø 2-3 highlighters
Ø Blue or black pens
Ø Glue sticks
Ø Scissors
Ø Colored pencils
Homework Policy: Homework is graded on the basis of completion and must demonstrate genuine effort. Late work is accepted. Late homework will automatically receive half credit.
Tardies and Absences/Make-up Work: The bell signals the beginning of class. Students are expected to be in their seats and prepared to work when they hear the bell.
Each student is responsible for completing all assignments and exams missed due to excused absences. Students will have the same number of missed days to complete make-up work for full credit.
Academic Integrity: All students are expected to complete their own work. Getting help from other students or family members is encouraged, but remember that the work submitted should reflect students’ own ideas and thoughts. Cheating will not be tolerated. Plagiarism is considered cheating. Students will receive an automatic zero on any assignment if found cheating. During testing, any form of communication will be considered cheating and the student will also receive a zero.
History website:
I maintain a website with a monthly calendar posting homework, quiz/test dates, and notebook checks. There are also links to some word documents that are used throughout year such as table of contents for the interactive notebook and handouts for other assignments. http://mssuazo.weebly.com/
Grading Components and Scale: I try to have grades posted as frequently as possible, about every 2 weeks.
Percentage of total grade Scale
Total= 100%
Recommendations
I recommend students study on a nightly basis even if it is only for 10-15 minutes at a time. Trying to study an entire unit the night before the test is incredibly difficult and time consuming. It is also important to study for cause and effect. Memorization of the facts is a great start but we must learn how one event is connected to one or many other events to understand the whole picture. There are no open note tests. And the only open note quizzes are INB quizzes which check for accuracy and organize in the INB which make up the notebook grade. All other quizzes are closed notes.
